Paris Is Burning
Tue, Jun 23 5:00 PM
Join us for a one day only screening of Paris is Burning (1990) | This documentary focuses on drag queens living in New York City and their "house" culture, which provides a sense of community and support for the flamboyant and often socially shunned performers. Groups from each house compete in elaborate balls that take cues from the world of fashion. Also touching on issues of racism and poverty, the film features interviews with a number of renowned drag queens, including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija and Dorian Corey. | This screening partners with Out in Print, an LGBTQ+ book club put on by The Center, La Crosse Public Library, and Pearl Street Books. Our June reading is The House of Impossible Beauties by Joseph Cassara. Join us after the screening to discuss common themes between The House of Impossible Beauties and Paris is Burning.
