Celebrate International Education Week with an evening of inspiring short films from around the world. Hosted by the La Crosse International Committee, this one-night festival showcases a vibrant mix of animation, drama, and heartfelt storytelling — highlighting voices from our sister-city countries and beyond.
This year’s program features four remarkable films that explore themes of connection, identity, and kindness across cultures:
The Tomten and the Fox
Norway | 2019 | 9 minutes | Norwegian (with English subtitles)
On a snowy winter night, a hungry fox sneaks into a farm in search of food—but is caught by the Tomten, a small guardian spirit of the household. Instead of punishment, the Tomten offers peace and a shared meal through the long winter nights.
A quiet, poetic animation rooted in Scandinavian folklore, this beautifully rendered short celebrates empathy, generosity, and coexistence. (Based on stories by Astrid Lindgren.)
The One Note Man
United Kingdom | 2023 | 21 minutes | English (minimal dialogue)
A solitary musician spends his days performing the same single note in an orchestra—until an unexpected change disrupts his routine and reawakens his sense of wonder.
Told almost entirely through visuals and music, this charming, dialogue-light film explores themes of isolation, repetition, and the rediscovery of joy.
Le Bleu Blanc Rouge de mes Cheveux (The Blue, White and Red of My Hair)
France | 2016 | 21 minutes | French (with English subtitles)
Seyna, a 17-year-old French teen of Cameroonian heritage, dreams of obtaining French citizenship after finishing her exams. But her father’s disapproval forces her to confront difficult questions about belonging and identity.
Grounded in social realism, this moving story captures the emotional complexity of growing up between two cultures and finding one’s voice.
Linda, Linda!
Luxembourg | 2024 | 17 minutes | Primarily English, with intermittent French, German, and Luxembourgish (with English subtitles)
Decades after leaving behind a life of crime, 82-year-old Linda has built a quiet, content life in Luxembourg. When her old partner suddenly reappears with “one last proposal,” she must decide whether to reopen the past or walk away for good.
An intimate, character-driven reflection on aging, closure, and the enduring pull of memory—with touches of dry humor and emotional warmth. (*this film contains some swearing and may not be appropriate for young children)
